The 1st Annual Meeting of the Gender and Law Studies Network (2005)

  The 1st Annual Meeting of the Gender and Law Studies Network (2005), organized by the Center for Gender and Law Studies, Institute of Law, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, was held on 16-17, December, 2005 in Beijing. 30 scholars from the Center for Gender and Law Studies and Women’s Studies Institute of China and universities around the county, and the project officers of Ford Foundation participated in the meeting. 

  There ware three opening speeches delivered warmly at the beginning of the Meeting. Mr. Shao Bo, the vice-director of the Institute of Law, gave the first speech to welcome the participants. He acknowledged the hard work and fruitful achievements of the Center for Gender and Law Studies and placed great hope on the meeting and the gender and law studies in China. Ms. Chen Mingxia, the director of the Center for Gender and Law Studies, identified the significance of the 1st Annual Meeting, explained the themes and the mission of it, pointed out the big challenges on legal mainstreaming of gender and encouraged the participants work hard and cooperate to push the cause in China. Mrs. Titi Liu, project officer of Ford Foundation, gave her own opinions on challenges in three levels, such as: the protection of women`s rights through judicial remedy, the analysis of gender factors and their consequences in particular laws, the analysis of gender factors behind law.

  The meeting comprises three themes. The participants discussed the following themes frankly and exchanged a lot about their experiences.

  The first theme was introduction of the work, including studies and teaching on gender and law in the universities and organizations of the participants after the training programs on August, 2004 organized by the Center for Gender and Law Studies. Several professors from different universities in Beijing or other provinces firstly introduced their activities, achievements and plans in future. Other participants gave their opinions and exchanged the experiences on how to effectively integrating the gender into their work.

  The second theme was the network`s current situation and development planning. The participants gave some constructive suggestions on the development, improvement and standardized operations of the network in the future after listening to the introduction to the background, aim, strategic objective, character, actions and challenges of the network..

  The last theme was discussion on the textbook of gender law in China. The authors of each chapter briefly introduced their work. Then participants of the Meeting gave active feedbacks about the structure, logic and other issues concerned.

  The Meeting had successfully deepened the connections and exchanges between the members of the network. The participants reached consensus on pushing forward the legal mainstreaming of gender equality. The most important and long-term influence of the 1st ?Annual Meeting was that it is for the first time to establish and maintain a platform in China for the coordination and exchange of the scholars and activists in the field of gender and law studies.
